About Downtown, the Khedivial city

Downtown, Wust El Balad, was laid out in the 19th century as a modern city on Parisian lines between the old city and the Nile. Its heart is Tahrir Square, with the Egyptian Museum on its northern side; from there the streets of Talaat Harb and Qasr El Nil run past belle-époque façades, the tea room of Groppi and the old Café Riche. Along the river stand the towers of the Ritz-Carlton, the St. Regis and Fairmont Nile City.

Sights

The Egyptian Museum, the restored passages and Cinema Radio.

Eating

Groppi, Café Riche and the hotel restaurants of the Corniche.

Look up: the best of Downtown is above the shopfronts.

Staying

The Nile Ritz-Carlton, The St. Regis and Fairmont Nile City.

Our advice: walk Downtown on a Friday morning, when the streets are quiet.
