About Heliopolis, the oasis city of 1905
Heliopolis was founded in 1905 by the Belgian industrialist Édouard Empain as a garden city in the desert north-east of Cairo, with arcaded streets in a Moorish revival style around the Korba quarter. His palace, inspired by the temples of Angkor, has been restored and is open; Cairo International Airport lies just beyond.
