The back story

Cairo has two airports: Cairo International (CAI), north-east of the centre, and Sphinx International (SPX), west of Giza near the Pyramids and the GEM. The metro’s three lines cross the city, with women-only carriages on every train; the East Nile monorail runs east to the New Administrative Capital. Egyptian National Railways leaves from Ramses Station for Alexandria and the Nile valley, and the Abela sleeper trains run overnight to Luxor and Aswan.

The metro (lines 1–3), the East Nile monorail, ride-hailing and hotel cars.
Take the sleeper one way to Aswan and fly back from Aswan or Luxor.
Up the Nile
Trains from Ramses Station to Alexandria; Abela sleeper trains to Luxor and Aswan; domestic flights with EgyptAir.
Our advice: buy train tickets on the operators’ own sites or at the station, never from touts.
