About Zamalek and Gezira, the island

Gezira is the island in the Nile opposite Downtown. Its southern half holds the Cairo Opera House, Cairo Tower and the Sofitel at the very tip; its northern half, Zamalek, is a leafy district of villas, embassies, galleries, cafés and restaurants, with the Cairo Marriott in its 19th-century palace and Le Pacha 1901 moored along the bank.
