Below the Citadel, the 14th-century mosque-madrasa of Sultan Hassan is one of the great monuments of Mamluk Cairo, its four vaulted halls opening onto a courtyard. Across the street stands the Al-Rifa’i Mosque, completed in the early 20th century, where members of the royal family were laid to rest.
